So, in a somewhat different vein from my previous posts, I give you *Shels latest release, Plains of the Purple Buffalo. Apparently, it pertains to a journey of sorts through the Sioux plains with White buffalo with indigenous people, which is unusual to say the least. However, one can imagine it to a certain extent with the way the album is laid out, this is not something one can listen to on shuffle; either listen to it in its entirety, in the correct order, or not at all. The album boasts a symphonic sound that differentiates itself from all the uninspired ‘power / epic / goth metal’ like Kamelot, Stream of Passion, Within Temptation and the like with a more ambient feel and without the urge to fill up every second with drumming crescendos. I would class it as post-metal with elements of sludge, ambient, and post-rock. It’s an album that is also a journey, give it a listen!
